Its history dates back to the 18th century when John Woodhouse, an English wine merchant, discovered the local wine and decided to fortify it with alcohol to increase its stability during long sea voyages. Marsala is primarily made using the grape varieties Grillo, Catarratto, and Inzolia. There are different types of Marsala, ranging from dry to sweet, and they are aged in wooden barrels for periods ranging from one to several decades. Marsala is characterized by a rich and complex flavor, with notes of dried fruit, caramel, and spices. It is often used in cooking to prepare sauces and desserts, as well as enjoyed as a dessert wine.
